(MAPC) LIFE SPAN PSYCHOLOGY (MPC-002) ANSWER 2017

QUESTION6- What are major motor skill development that takes place during childhood (6-11 years)?

ANS- Along with body growth and development, motor skills are also continuing to develop and become more refined. One the gross motor skills that was already mentioned, is flexibility. Since the ligaments are not fully connected, kids are more flexible, allowing them to do sports such as gymnastics, tumbling, and jumping. Children begin to have a faster reaction time. This will increase their abilities when playing sports, or PE class. Balance also improves helping with running, basketball, and soccer. Force comes into play as well during this stage, and will also help with both running and jumping, as well as throwing and kicking. The older the child, the greater the force. The last of the gross motor skills that is improved during this stage is agility. Better agility equates to good dancers and cheerleaders, and helps in games like tag or soccer where changes in movement are made quickly. As for the fine motor skills, writing and drawing are continuing to improve. At 6-7 years old, most children are able to write their full name, alphabet and numbers.

Their writing is larger "...because they make strokes with the entire arm rather than just the wrist and fingers....[and they] master uppercase letters first because their horizontal and vertical motions are easier to control than the small curves of the lowercase alphabet" (Berk 231). As they get older, they fine tune their writing, and master the smaller movements of the lower case alphabet. With drawing, it progresses from two dimensional with some depth to third dimensional drawings with the use of overlapping, and proper spacing. The drawings are also more organized and detailed. Here is a link to a page someone created with pictures of their drawings from the ages of 2-24. He's a really good artist so towards adolescence it starts to become above average, but it gives an idea of the standard progression through childhood.
