Q4. a) Give the composition and functions of:
(i) Gastric juice
(ii) Pancreatic juice

ANS (I) The gastric juice contains three principal enzyms or digestive principles. These are hydrochloric acid, pepsin, and rennet. The hydrochloric acid and the pepsin are secreted by different cells, and could be considered as separate Dijestive juice, but as the action of one is dependent upon the other, I will consider these actions as one.
Pancreatic juice is composed of several enzymes including trypsinogen, chymotrypsinogen, elastase, carboxypeptidase, pancreatic lipase, nucleases and amylase. These are released into the small intestine where they help break down fats, proteins and carbohydrates for absorption into the bloodstream.
