(MSCDFSM) Nutritional Biochemistry (TMA-2) ANSWER 2017

Q10. a) Briefly discuss the role of:
• Insulin on carbohydrate metabolism
• Parathormone in calcium homeostasis
ANS- * Insulin and Carbohydrate Metabolism. ... Elevated concentrations of glucose in blood stimulate release of insulin, and insulin acts on cells thoughout the body to stimulate uptake, utilization and storage of glucose. The effects of insulin on glucose metabolism vary depending on the target tissue.
•        Calcium moves into bone as osteoblasts build new bone and out of bone as osteoclasts break down bone. The hormones parathyroid hormone (PTH) and calcitonin help regulate blood calcium levels. Calcitonin, secreted by the thyroid gland inhibits osteoclasts and stimulates osteoblasts, thus decreasing blood calcium levels.
