(MSCDFSM) Nutritional Biochemistry (TMA-2) ANSWER 2017

Q1. Explain the following in 2-3 sentences.
a) Isozymes
b) Keshan disease
c) Conjugated proteins
d) Apolipoproteins
e) Anaplerotic reactions

ANS(A)- Isozymes (also known as isoenzymes or more generally as Multiple forms of enzymes) are enzymes that differ in amino acid sequence but catalyze the same chemical reaction. These enzymes usually display different kinetic parameters (e.g. different KM values), or different regulatory properties.

ANS(B)- Keshan disease is a congestive cardiomyopathy caused by a combination of dietary deficiency of selenium and the presence of a mutated strain of Coxsackievirus, named after Keshan County of Heilongjiang province, Northeast China, where symptoms were first noted.

ANS(C)- A conjugated protein is a protein that functions in interaction with other (non-polypeptide) chemical groups attached by covalent bonding or weak interactions. Many proteins contain only amino acids and no other chemical groups, and they are called simple proteins.

ANS(D)- Apolipoproteins are proteins that bind lipids (oil-soluble substances such as fat and cholesterol) to form lipoproteins. They transport the lipids through the lymphatic and circulatory systems. The lipid components of lipoproteins are insoluble in water.

ANS(E)- Anaplerotic reactions are chemical reactions that form intermediates of a metabolic pathway. Examples of such are found in the citric acid cycle (TCA cycle).
