(MSCDFSM) Nutritional Biochemistry (TMA-2) ANSWER 2017

b) How are lipid transported in blood? List the four major groups of lipoproteins involved in lipid transport.

ANS- Free fatty acids are transported in the blood bound to albumin, a serum protein secreted by the liver. Most other lipids are transported in the blood as part of complex particles called lipoproteins. ... HDL (high density lipoprotein, highest in density due to high protein/lipid ratio).

Many enzymes, transporters, structural proteins, antigens, adhesins, and toxins are lipoproteins. Examples include the plasma lipoprotein particles classified under HDL, LDL, IDL, VLDL and ULDL (commonly called chylomicron) lipoproteins, which enable fats to be carried in all extracellular water including the blood stream (an example of emulsification), subgroups of which are primary drivers/modulators of atherosclerosis,[1] the transmembrane proteins of the mitochondrion and the chloroplast, and bacterial lipoproteins.
